Full description of the piece after the jump...

Little Boy and Fat Man were the names of both of the nuclear weapons dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki respectively, and were the only two bombs detonated offensively.

The subject surrounding the droppings of these bombs is a sensitive and contentious topic, especially for many Japanese Americans.  What opinions Japanese Americans hold regarding the bombs illustrate the epitome of the dichotomy of their identities.

The illustrations depict kewpies* desperately attempting to impede the unstoppable force of the nuclear bombs dropping.

“Pikadons Diptych Kozo” depicts a Koinobori (carp streamer wind socks) traditionally flown on flagpoles everywhere in Japan to celebrate Children’s Day, to represent hope that their children will grow up healthy and strong.  Little boys & little girls looked forward to the celebration of Children’s day, and the uranium bomb Little Boy annihilated the hopes and dreams of many.

“Pikadons Diptych Debu” shows Fat Man being dropped over Nagasaki.  The second of the two bombs some question the necessity of the second bombing after Japan as a nation was recovering from the shock of the first.  A B-29 became Fat Man’s motif as a bomb that looks like a bomber dropping more bombs symbolizes the excessive force applied by the dropping of this plutonium bomb.

The dripping clouds in the background is the foreshadowing of black rain, a term used by the survivors to describe the nuclear fallout which manifested itself in the form of precipitation.

Pikadons Diptych is by no means endorsing violence, but it was an attempt to describe the sadness of the event from both sides.  Even the bombs themselves are sad.  War is sad, and this embodies Japan’s pacifistic attitude post World War 2.

*Enfu often uses Kewpies as a hybrid symbol between east and west.  Western Angels are often depicted with wings, and Eastern Tenshi are depicted with flying scarves (Hagoromo), both which are used in illustrations to reveal their angelic status.
